What Roughcut is

Not a pattern with one outcome — a construction system.

You watch the whole thing get made — every seam, start to finish, nothing skipped. Every pattern is graded 01 to 05, so you know what you're taking on before you cut.

These are stepping stones, not instruction manuals — tools for your own ideas rather than one fixed outcome.

The machine doesn't define the maker.

Every pattern here can be made on any domestic machine. This one's mine — vinyl wrapped, the same way a car is. Underneath the wrap it's a base-level domestic, no different to yours.

“I love the way the shorts pattern is designed. A lot of possibilities to create my own shorts according to my needs and preferences. Definitely makeable on a home sewing machine. The result is stunning — every single piece fits perfect. To be authentic I used 50-year-old jeans fabric and a jeans needle.”

“The trousers are the most convenient and at the same time the best looking trousers I have ever had. I made them in 410g/m² twill. I sewed all the topstitching, which gave me the chance to learn how to topstitch both the outer and inner leg seams — not as complicated as I thought.”

“Many patterns have a hundred different lines for different sizes. This one was very clear, even on the pockets. Love the overall fit, easy to follow instructions. Love it!”

“The pattern is perfect. I've already made two pairs — one basic, then a more elaborate second pair. Choosing different pockets and mixing materials, I could create the perfect pair of baggy shorts.”

A full breakdown of the process — what the whole pathway looks like, from download to finished garment.

Never done this before

What is a sewing pattern?

A blueprint for clothing — the exact shapes you cut from fabric and sew together. That's it. Start simple, one build at a time, and the rest arrives on its own.

Before you buy

The honest answers.

Do I need an expensive sewing machine?
No. Every pattern here is designed and tested on a standard domestic machine — the one in the scan above is mine, and under the vinyl wrap it's base-level. For denim you want a denim needle, strong thread and the right fabric weight. That's the whole kit list.
I've never sewn anything. Where do I start?
The free Industrial Tote, then the Kit Duffle. Straight seams, no fitting, nothing to go wrong. Once those feel easy, Level 02 is your first wearable garment. Don't start at Level 03 — the denim patterns assume you've already got the basics.
Are there written step-by-step instructions?
The construction is taught on video rather than on paper — you watch every seam get made, in order, nothing skipped or hidden behind a diagram. Two formats come with each pattern: a full workshop tutorial that explains every system, and a POV build you can sew along with in real time. What is written is the handbook: choosing your build, organising pieces, printing, hardware, fabric and prep, all before you cut.
How do I print it?
A0, A4 and US Letter files all come in the same download. Print at 100% / actual size — never "scale to fit" — and measure the 2" × 2" test square before you cut any fabric. Print from a laptop rather than a phone; the settings are far more reliable. A0 files can go to any local copy shop, or choose Printed & Shipped and skip the whole thing.
Do I need to add seam allowance?
No — ¼" is already built in, so you cut directly on the pattern line. Fly, yoke and pocket areas occasionally use a different allowance; those are always stated in the tutorial and the handbook. The only exceptions are a few early patterns like the Ushanka Cap and the Duffle Bag.
My files haven't arrived. What now?
Check your spam and junk folder first — that's it about nine times out of ten. If you tapped through from Instagram, open the page in Safari or Chrome instead; the in-app browser can silently block PDF downloads. Still nothing? Message WhatsApp with your order number and the email you used at checkout.
How do I get help?
WhatsApp. Instagram DMs and the Discord aren't monitored for orders, and messages sent there get lost. Email is read but slow. WhatsApp comes straight to me and usually gets answered the same day. The Discord is for sharing builds and getting sewing advice from other makers.
Do I pay again when a pattern gets updated?
No. Updates are free for life, and support runs through WhatsApp and Discord for as long as you're building it.
