The Keystone Denims are Roughcut’s most in-depth sewing pattern to date — a modular selvedge jean system designed to teach how a pair of jeans is actually constructed, while giving the maker complete freedom to design their own version.

Rather than locking you into a single look, Keystone functions as a foundation pattern — a base garment you can build, adapt, and personalise through interchangeable components, heritage construction methods, and intentional documentation.

A Foundation for Understanding Denim

At its core, Keystone is a wide, straight-leg jean with a deep rise and clean, architectural proportions — designed specifically for selvedge denim and traditional jean construction.

The pattern focuses on how and why jeans are built the way they are:

flat-felled seams, durable topstitching, structured waistbands, functional pocket systems, and hardware-led reinforcement.

This is not about copying an existing pair of jeans — it’s about learning the logic behind them.

A Fully Modular System

Every major element of the Keystone Denims is modular, allowing you to mix and match based on skill level, design intent, or experimentation:

• Two front pocket options (classic or button-closure)

• Three interchangeable back pocket designs

• Button fly or zip fly construction

• Optional one-piece zip fly (advanced technique & pushes skill level 5)

• Two buckle configurations

• Two double-knee styles (classic or Roughcut curved)

• Optional heel-drag reinforcement

• Optional hammer loop and utility details

• Waistband curve features

Each decision changes the final garment — meaning no two pairs need to look the same.

Designed Before You Sew

Keystone goes beyond pattern pieces.

Before cutting fabric, you’re guided through planning and visualisation — including:

• A 2D front & back visualisation page for sketching your design

• A back-pocket stitch template page for drawing custom stitch lines

(sew directly through the paper and tear it away for clean results)

These pages encourage experimentation, storytelling, and intentional design — not just assembly.

The Denim Passport System

Every Keystone build ends with documentation.

The pattern includes a two-part Denim Passport system:

• A branded Denim Passport card, stapled into the back pocket

• A Maker’s Notes insert for reflecting on materials, techniques, and decisions

Together, they record:

• Fabric choice & weight

• Hardware used

• Construction options selected

• Build date & notes

Turning each pair into a documented artifact, not just a finished garment.

Skill Level & Learning Support

Keystone Denims is rated Skill Level 4 and is ideal for confident makers ready to deepen their understanding of garment construction.

To support the build, the pattern includes:

• Clear cutting, sticking, and construction guides

• A written construction roadmap

• A completely free, full start-to-finish video tutorial, walking through the entire process

You’re never left guessing — but you’re always encouraged to explore.
