The Yard Carpenters
The trouser piece inside the Roughcut Workwear System.
A proper carpenter trouser sewing pattern built around durability, clean proportion, strong pocketing, and long-term wear.
The Yard Carpenters are designed to feel like real work trousers. Straight leg. Relaxed through the seat and thigh. Practical pockets. Strong waistband. Reinforced stress points. Built to be worn, repaired, faded, marked, and kept in rotation for years.
They pair naturally with the Yard Jacket, but stand confidently on their own.
Classic workwear shape. Roughcut construction logic. Built for the yard, the studio, the workshop, and everyday use.
Why This Pattern Exists
The Yard Carpenters are the first proper trouser project in the Workwear System.
This pattern teaches the foundations of workwear trousers: pocket systems, waistband construction, button fly construction, hardware placement, long seam control, topstitching, and working with heavier fabrics like duck canvas, drill, twill and denim.
There are no unnecessary design tricks here. The shape is calm and functional so the fabric, fit, fading, repairs, and wear patterns become the character of the garment over time.

Fabric Guidance Included
The Yard Carpenters are designed around durable workwear fabrics that can hold structure, take stress, and improve with use.
Inside the pattern resources, you will get fabric recommendations, weight guidance, hardware notes, and sourcing support so you can choose the right fabric for the type of trouser you want to build.
Recommended fabrics include:
- Duck canvas
- Workwear canvas
- Heavy cotton drill
- Cotton twill
- Denim
- Hickory stripe for lighter workshop versions
Heavier fabrics will create a structured, traditional work trouser. Slightly lighter fabrics will create something easier to move in while still keeping the workwear shape.
Tutorial Support Included
The Yard Carpenters include build-along tutorial support to help you through the main construction stages.
The tutorial resources cover the important areas of the build, including pocket construction, utility pocket placement, hammer loop construction, waistband assembly, button fly construction, reinforcement, hardware and final finishing.
This makes the pattern much easier to approach if you are building proper trousers for the first time.

Built to Wear In, Not Wear Out
The Yard Carpenters are designed to get better with time.
The clean leg shape lets the fabric do the work. The pockets will soften. The knees will crease. The canvas will fade. Repairs and patches will only add to the garment rather than ruin it.
This is a practical trouser pattern, but it is also one of the most important steps in the Workwear System — the point where you move from simple sewing into real garment building.
