The Pattern

Finally here — the pattern you've been asking for

Hooded Workwear Jacket
Skill Level 3 / 5

1 Field Jacket

A heavyweight, hooded workwear jacket built around structured shoulders, a generous attached hood, a large kangaroo-style front pocket, centre-front zip closure, and rib-knit cuffs and hem for a snug, durable finish. The shape is boxy and grounded — designed to layer, take wear, and look better the more it's used.

This has been the single most requested pattern in Roughcut's history — built from real fieldwork, fittings and feedback, and finally ready.

Course & Tutorials

Two ways to follow the build

The main studio tutorial takes you through the full Field Jacket build from start to finish — every panel, every seam, every stage. Alongside it, a 3-part travel sewing series follows the same build on the move, filmed across South England, in a more vlog-style format.

Fabric Guidance

Built for durable workwear fabrics

Recommended fabrics

  • Duck canvas
  • Workwear canvas
  • Heavy cotton drill
  • Waxed or washed canvas for a softer, lived-in finish
  • Rib knit for cuffs and hem

Heavier fabrics create a structured, traditional field jacket. Washed or midweight canvas creates a softer, more everyday-wearable version.

Printing Correctly

📐 Printing Box

  • Files included for A0, A4 and US Letter — all three formats included in your digital download
  • Print at 100% / actual size — never "scale to fit"
  • Measure the 2" × 2" test square before cutting any fabric (has to be perfect)
  • Print from a laptop/computer for the most reliable print settings
  • A0 print files for this pattern span 5 sheets — A0 files can be taken to a local print shop
  • Printed & Shipped is also available if you'd rather skip tiling & sticking at home

📎 Tiling Pages?

If you're printing at home on A4 or US Letter, your pages need tiling and sticking together before cutting fabric. Full instructions on the Help page.

Seam Allowance

✂️ Seam Allowance Box

  • Every Roughcut pattern (except a few early patterns like the Ushanka Cap and Duffle Bag) already has 1/4" seam allowance built in
  • Cut directly on the pattern line — no need to add anything
  • Hood, pocket and rib-knit application areas may use different allowances — these are stated in the tutorial
  • If unsure, watch the tutorial before cutting

⚠ First Build? Read This First

  • Buy a little extra fabric — mistakes happen while learning, and there's no room for re-cutting otherwise
  • Don't cut your final fabric until your test square is correct
  • Watch the tutorial before cutting into good fabric
  • Use scrap or cheaper test fabric if unsure

DOMESTIC
MACHINE
OK

Built for your home machine

The Field Jacket is designed and tested on a standard domestic sewing machine. With the right needle, thread and fabric weight, no industrial equipment is needed — the tutorial walks you through exactly what to use at each stage.
