The Pattern

The bridge between small projects and serious garments

Shirt · Woven
Skill Level 2 / 5

1 The Maker's Shirt

Short sleeves eliminate the challenge of full sleeves under the sewing foot, keeping the focus on the essentials — cutting clean armholes, sewing two functional front pockets, and attaching a crisp collar. The unlined construction introduces clean finishing techniques, whether using an overlocker for the first time or cover-stitching on a domestic machine.

Lightweight, comfortable, and confidence-building — the perfect bridge between small accessories and more advanced pieces like trousers or outerwear. Part of the Roughcut Pattern Series, designed in CLO3D and co-developed by Jack & Gio.

Printing Correctly

📐 Printing Box

  • Files included for A0, A4 and US Letter
  • Print at 100% / actual size — never "scale to fit" (print guide included)
  • Measure the 2" × 2" test square before cutting any fabric (has to be perfect)
  • Print from a laptop/computer for the most reliable print settings
  • A0 files can be taken to a local print shop
  • Printed & Shipped is also available if you'd rather skip tiling & sticking at home
Open Print & Tiling Guide

📎 Tiling Pages?

If you're printing at home on A4 or US Letter, your pages need tiling and sticking together before cutting fabric. Full instructions — tiling, sticking, cutting and pre-production — are covered on the Help page.

Seam Allowance

✂️ Seam Allowance Box

  • Every Roughcut pattern (except a few early patterns like the Ushanka Cap and Duffle Bag) already has 1/4" seam allowance built in
  • Cut directly on the pattern line — no need to add anything
  • Hems, collar and pocket areas may use different allowances — these are stated in the written pattern guidance
  • If unsure, refer to the construction notes before cutting — and the Kiri & Kaze tutorial for collar technique reference

⚠ First Build? Read This First

  • Buy a little extra fabric — shirt-weight fabric can be tricky to re-cut if you make a mistake
  • Don't cut your final fabric until your test square is correct
  • This pattern has no dedicated video tutorial yet — read through the full written instructions before cutting into good fabric
  • Watch the Kiri & Kaze tutorial for collar stand and shirt assembly reference before starting
  • Use a cheaper fabric to practise the collar and armhole finishing first

DOMESTIC
MACHINE
OK

Built for your home machine

The Maker's Shirt is designed and tested on a standard domestic sewing machine. Overlocker finishing is shown where relevant but a zigzag stitch works perfectly as an alternative.
