- Attaching straps and doing basic top-stitching.
Free Pattern 02 — The Outrider Belt
This utility belt pattern is designed as a compact introduction to the techniques used in Roughcut jackets, cargos and vests — but scaled down into a beginner-friendly, fast project. You’ll work with curved panels, layered pockets and neat top-stitching, giving you a small, wearable piece that feels like real gear from the moment you finish it.
What you'll learn:
- How to sew curves cleanly and shape the belt’s silhouette.
- How to build small pockets, flaps and layered panels with structure.
- How to control tighter seam allowances and create sharp, technical top-stitching.
- How to assemble straps and hardware for a functional, cross-body utility piece.
Pre-Production: Printing, Sticking & Cutting
Before you start sewing, you'll need to print the PDF pattern, tape the pages together, and cut out your pieces. This process is used across all Roughcut patterns and becomes very easy once you've done it once.
Watch the video tutorial below, which walks through printing to scale, trimming the pages, taping layout, and preparing the pattern for fabric.
What DO These Free Patterns Prepare You For??
Once you've built the Industrial Tote Bag and the Outrider Belt, you've learned the core foundations behind every Roughcut pattern. These two projects use the same techniques as the larger pieces—just in smaller, easier sections. You're not learning beginner skills; you're learning the real system, scaled down.
What you've learned:
- Understanding printed PDFs and taping layout
- Clean cutting and fabric handling
- Straight seams and top-stitching
- Curves, pocket construction, panels and straps
- Reading markings, alignment notches and construction order
From here you're ready to move into jackets, hoodies, cargos, vests and more—all built on the same system.
